Grading the Newest Sex Scandal Teacher
Alabama – A former substitute teacher accused of having sexual contact with a Florence High School student has been indicted on a felony charge, authorities said.
Kayla D. Safford, 24, was booked into the Lauderdale County jail this morning, records show. She has been released on $10,000 bail.
Safford was a contract substitute teacher when she had off-campus sex with an 18-year-old student, said Florence police Capt. Brad Holmes in a news release.
“…evidence obtained in this case shows that the relationship with the student occurred as a result of her employment in the school system,” Holmes said. …
Safford’s attorney Tim Case said he and his client “adamantly deny that she committed any wrongdoing.”
Any school employee who has sexual contact with a student younger than 19 can be convicted of a felony and required to register as a sex offender, according to Alabama law. Consent isn’t a defense — even if the student has reached Alabama’s age of consent, which is 16.
Case said he plans to challenge the indictment and Alabama’s teacher-student sex law. The law has been deemed unconstitutional by a Morgan County judge, but the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals reversed that decision. The constitutionality question is being appealed to the state supreme court.
OK, so maybe we don’t know all the details yet. But this still makes for a great Sex Scandal Teacher entry because of what we do know. That Kayla D. Stafford is a fighter. Attorney Tim Case is a fighter. These two don’t deny that she took liberties with a high schooler. But they do deny that, by their definition, having “off campus sex with an 18-year-old student” is doing anything wrong. And they are speaking that truth to power and fighting to change the system.
You have to admit – well, at least the population of professional teachers interested in boning high school kids would have to admit – they have a point. The age of consent in Alabama is 16. At 18 you can help decide the President of the United States, join the military, get married and legally own a gun. And get sloppy with anyone else over the age of consent who’s a willing partner. Unless they work at your school. If they work as some other school, you’re good. If the kid in question goes to that teacher’s bitter football rival? Also good. So much for that “equal protection” provision under the Constitution. It’s discrimination. Discrimination, I tells ya. Or, better yet, Miss Stafford and her lawyer tells ya. And they will not rest until this statute is struck down and every SST can seduce teenagers as God intended.
The Grades:
Looks: I looked everywhere for another photo, and this is all I got. But I like it. She’s almost a Wheelhouse Chick for me. Sort of a cross between Rose Byrne and Natalie Portman. And I don’t make comparisons like that lightly.
Grade: A-
Moral Compass/Bad Judgment: Again, I’d prefer details. But then again, fighting her fight on the basis of not whether she did it but whether the law telling her she can’t do it is constitutional? That’s practically a confession. So
Grade: B
Intangibles: Someday we’ll live in a world where every hot teacher is free to date her students. And when that day comes, Tim Case will be on the Supreme Court. The civil rights pioneer who freed an oppressed people.
Grade: B
Overall: B+
